Incorporating metapopulation dynamics to inform invasive species management: Evaluating bighead and silver carp control strategies in the Illinois River

چکیده

Invasive species management can benefit from predictive models that incorporate spatially explicit demographics and dispersal to guide resource allocation decisions. We used invasive bigheaded carps (Hypophthalmichthys spp.) in the Illinois River, USA as a case study create model evaluate of future efforts. Specifically, we compared additional harvest (e.g. near invasion front vs. source populations) enhanced movement deterrents meet goal reducing abundance at front. found lower river pools (i.e. targeting more effectively limited population sizes upriver allocating same levels Likewise, decreasing passage lock dam structures) farthest, feasible downriver location size than placing farther upriver. Synthesis applications. Our work highlights benefits adopting multipronged approach for management, combining suppression populations with disrupting between sink thereby producing compounding control. results also demonstrate importance considering metapopulation dynamics control programs when achieving long-term goals.

Bighead Carp

In the United States, bighead are polycultured with channel catfish in approximately 5,100 acres of earthen ponds, including an estimated 4,000 acres in Arkansas, 500 in Mississippi, and 600 in Alabama. Bighead are an important source of additional income that, at times of low catfish prices, has kept some fish farmers in business. The primary market is to live-haulers who sell to specialty mar...

Aspects of Embryonic and Larval Development in Bighead Carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

As bighead carp Hypophthalmichthysnobilis and silver carp H. molitrix (the bigheaded carps) are poised to enter the Laurentian Great Lakes and potentially damage the region's economically important fishery, information on developmental rates and behaviors of carps is critical to assessing their ability to establish sustainable populations within the Great Lakes basin. In laboratory experiments,...

Characterization and Comparative Profiling of MiRNA Transcriptomes in Bighead Carp and Silver Carp

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that are processed from large 'hairpin' precursors and function as post-transcriptional regulators of target genes. Although many individual miRNAs have recently been extensively studied, there has been very little research on miRNA transcriptomes in teleost fishes. By using high throughput sequencing technology, we have identified 167 and 1...

Ontogenetic changes in meristic measurements of silver carp and bighead carp.

The study analyzed 30 exterior meristic characters for 255 silver and bighead carp samples of 1- to 5-year-old collected from the National Primary Breeding Farm at Laojianghe Lake at the Middle Reach of the Yangtze River. Multivariate analysis was performed. In silver carp, the Euclidean distance was the greatest between the 1-year-old group and other age groups. Silver carp individuals were co...
